These tensions, economic as well as cultural, still lie pretty close to the surface across Europe, in my experience. Add this to the apparent rise of right-wing populism in some of the eastern Europe countries. Stir in an economic crisis and a rising sense of mutual resentment between an ethnic/religious minority and you get a volatile mix. The resulting disquiet may explain why many Europeans continue to want a relatively strong U.S. presence in Europe.
