Iran's "diplomatic godfather" indeed. Russia doesn't seem to be worried about the possibility of a nuclear -armed Iran - wonder why?

same reason as US not worried about a nuclear-armed Israel; or Pakistan

and neither is a signatory of the NPT

My guess is that the U.S. is not worried about a reportedly nuclear-armed Israel in large part because Israel doesn't have a stated policy of annihilating any of its neighbors - but Iran does. Israel doesn't support terrorist groups who have threatened to attack the U.S. - Iran does.

My,my - Ahmadinejad must have attended Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" Seminar - everyone was to friend him.

Bruce - you voiced the exact same question I was wondering.

Iran does not seem to have a good history of being "handled". I realize all of Iran's enmity is focused on Israel and the U.S. - but whose to say about next year

And if Pakistan feels they have a nuclear ally - how does that effect the balance in their relationship with India. Pakistan hasn't seemed too restrained in it's dealings with India when they felt isolated, now they seem to have found a buddy system with Iran and Afghanistan. Will this embolden Pakistan?

Kathryn - interesting points. Many worry about the balance of power in the Persian Gulf region, I've not heard anyone raise the concern you did about the balance in Southwest Asia.

You're are diplomatic, sir . I'm showing my ignorance on foreign policy and the situation in the Middle East, which is probably why no one else has raised any questions about Southwest Asia. ;~)) But I'm trainable!

Kathryn, not ignorant at all. I think your point is a good one and certainly worth considering. Russia and India have long had ties. It would probably be beneficial for both Pakistan and Iran if they were to cozy up to balance that regional partnership. I think the biggest hurdle is the Sunni-Shia thing, but that doesn't seem to keep Iran from working with Syria.

urgh! It's like peeling a damn onion -everytime I think I understand the dynamics and motivation of the various alliances, a new one pops up that confounds the reasoning behind all the previous machinations! How do the people in the various alphabet agencies/departments keep it all straight!
